Use Credit Karma to Take Control of Your Credit
Your Credit Report Is a Starting Point—Not a Life SentenceFor gig workers, your credit can play an important role in getting access to apartments, loans, credit cards, vehicles, and other opportunities. But before you can improve your credit, you need to understand what is actually being reported about you.
One tool that can help you get started is Credit Karma.
Credit Karma provides free access to credit information from TransUnion and Equifax and can alert you when certain information on those reports changes. It can be a useful way to keep an eye on your credit and spot potential problems.
Start by Looking for the Red Flags
When reviewing your credit information, don’t just look at your score. Look at the details behind it.
Check for:
Accounts you don’t recognize
Payments incorrectly reported as late
Incorrect balances or credit limits
Accounts that should have been closed
Duplicate accounts or debts
Incorrect personal information
Collection accounts that don’t belong to you
Hard inquiries you don’t recognize
These types of errors can affect your credit record, and the CFPB recommends reviewing your reports regularly for inaccurate or incomplete information.
Found a Mistake? Don’t Ignore It.
If you find an error, document it before you dispute it. Take notes, save copies of statements, payment records, letters, or other documentation that supports your claim.
Credit Karma offers a Direct Dispute feature for certain errors appearing on your TransUnion report. Equifax disputes must be submitted directly to Equifax.
It’s important to remember that Credit Karma is a tool for identifying and monitoring potential problems—it doesn’t automatically fix your credit.
You have the legal right to dispute inaccurate information yourself, generally at no cost, with the credit reporting company and the company that supplied the information.
Don’t Try to Remove What Is Accurate
This is where credit repair advice can sometimes become misleading.
If a negative item is accurate, you generally can’t simply have it removed because you don’t like it. Be cautious of anyone promising to erase legitimate negative information from your credit report.
Instead, focus on what you can control: paying bills on time, managing balances, addressing legitimate debts, correcting inaccurate information, and building positive credit habits over time.
Your Gig Ethic Credit Checkup
Think of checking your credit like checking the dashboard of your car. You don’t wait for the engine to fail before looking at the warning lights.
Check it. Understand it. Question what doesn’t look right. Document it. Take action.
For gig workers balancing multiple income streams and expenses, staying on top of your credit can be another important part of taking control of your financial future.
Gig Ethic Tip: Don’t just check your credit score—check the information behind the score. Finding an error is only the first step. Knowing how to address it is where the real work begins.
